10. Terror on Hwy. 59

In 1984, a young reporter at the Austin American Statesman received a letter detailing “irregular” actions taken during traffic stops along Highway 59 in San Jacinto County by Sheriff James Cecil “Humpy” Parker and his deputies. His reports led to state and federal investigations that landed Sheriff Parker, his son Gary Parker, and two other deputies in prison. The echoes still haunt this small community today.
